What Makes Good Web Design?
While I was a Junior at the University of Southern Indiana, I took a class specifically for Evansville web design and development. At the time I was already 2 years into experience with applicable business experience in Evansville website design & development. I had to take the class as a CS elective at USI. I wanted to focus on Evansville web design and the needs of the surrounding area. I wanted to know what the exact local need in Evansville web design was – yes I stress the word Evansville web design because it is much different than other cities web design. We are a unique city and have unique needs.
Many things stuck out to me in that class. How wrong that so much was taught was foremost! Again, this is just my opinion and thought… And of course, maybe I am wrong – but I don’t think so. I was taught at USI many things that are just not true to correct thinking. For Evansville web design their focus was primarily on the navigation, colors and the buzzword of “responsive design”. Don’t get me wrong. Those are important. But it was obvious that the professor(s) had never had employment in website design…
Let me go over what I think is most important to Evansville web design…
Good Evansville web design always caters to the specific needs of the user. Are your visitors looking for information, something interesting, informative, some type of interaction, or to transact with your business? Each page of your website needs to have a clear purpose, and to fulfill a specific need in the most efficient way for your users.
People on the web tend to want information quickly – and I mean quickly. There is next to no attention span here… so it is important to communicate quickly, clearly and make your information easy to read and understand.
A well thought out color palette can go a long way to enhance the user experience. Complementary colors create balance and harmony. Not to sound too “artistic”, but it is true. People will look at something pleasing to the eyes and base their opinions on such objects (not even close to being relevant at times) as being a basis of competency for the business. Using appropriate colors for the font, text and background(s) will make reading easier on the eye. Vibrant colors create emotion (or craziness) and should be used only in appropriateness. Last but not least on this topic, white space is very effective at giving your website a modern and uncluttered look. However, don’t get too crazy on this. Some sites from the early 2000’s reflect an enormous amount of white space. On the opposite end, you have websites that are so clustered with colors that it is hard to even understand what is going on. For example, Mr. Bottles website is epic!
As the ancient cliche goes… “a picture can speak a thousand words”, and choosing the right images for your Evansville web design of a website can help with brand positioning and connecting with your target audience. It also helps with search engine optimization (SEO). If you don’t have high quality professional photos on hand, consider purchasing stock photos to lift the look of your website (try not to pirate as those tend to lead to serious consequences). Also consider using informational graphics, videos and typical graphics as these can be much more effective at communicating than even the most well written piece of text.
Navigation is about the easiness to move around your site. It also deals with knowing where something is located on a site. Using correct coloring, button positions, bread crumbs and general well designed pallets usually solves this.
6. “F” PATTERN DESIGN
Eye tracking studies have identified that people scan computer screens in an “F” pattern. Most of what people see is in the top and left of the screen and the right side of the screen is rarely seen. Rather than trying to force the viewer’s visual flow, effective Evansville web design teams will work with a reader’s natural behavior and display information in order of importance (left to right, and top to bottom). We, as web developers, are not trying to fight the evolutionary factors of the human eye condition(s). You just go with the flow of research and science on this. Thousands upon thousands of years our ancestors developed the characteristics of where to look at objects with their eyes. Don’t fight that. Use it to your advantage!
7. LOAD TIME
8. MOBILE FRIENDLY
It is now commonplace to access websites from multiple devices with multiple screen sizes, so it is important to consider if your website is mobile friendly. If your website is not mobile friendly, you can either rebuild it in a responsive layout (this means your website will adjust to different screen widths) or you can build a dedicated mobile site (a separate website optimized specifically for mobile users). Of course, any competent Evansville web design team will make your site in this day and era responsive. Also, don’t go along the trend of the buzzword “responsive”. This isn’t something to “ooohhh” and “aaahhh” at. Even for senior system analysts who are out of touch because they have been “pigeon holed” at some corporation – just don’t do it. You sound outright incompetent! This is a fact of what should be done for your website. Make your site for all devices no matter what.
What is different? Different isn’t copying what someone else has already done. But different has a lot of connotations. Different means hitting certain aspects in different punches, looking at what competition did right and what they did wrong, looking at where you can slam yourself into and looking at the opportunities others are missing!!! Don’t be that person who epitomizes “copypasta”.
10. SEO FRIENDLY
Why even have an Evansville web design team develop you a site if no one can find it? PHN Solutions, INC has had many clients that had past Evansville web developers who didn’t perform or care about search engine optimization (SEO). We explain the importance, we relay that message to you clearly and we will explain all the details to you until you completely understand. Increasingly people have, and will continue to, “Google” information they need. Essentially that just means they will look up on the internet what they are needing or are having questions about. It is your digital marketing forefront. If you are talking to a person who claims to do web design, but doesn’t talk about SEO – go elsewhere. It is like opening a retail store in the middle of the woods if you do not do SEO tactics – SEO can put that retail store in the middle of the market!
Lastly, I want to explain analytics a bit. An Evansville web design doesn’t just end at the “finishing of a site”. Web developers aren’t magicians. They cannot foresee the future of keywords or know what areas and market desires that demand the specific keywords for your business and location. But we do have a pretty good idea. And we use analytics to do it. Big data tells us big trends and big business factors. Their is a reason so much is invested in it. PHN Solutions, INC dives right into big data. We look not only what hits your site and what keyword made the traffic come to your site, but we look at much more. We look at keys that appear to suggest your site. That means that if the site pops up on the first page of a search engine, regardless if they clicked, we see it. We look at what makes your business tick(s), shows, displays when and displays where at. Analytics tell you where to go – when you didn’t even know the destination existed.
